Arrival Time: Breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m. and school begins at 9:00 a.m., unless you are eating breakfast, you cannot enter the building until 8:45 a.m. If your child enters my room after the 9:00 bell, they will be marked tardy. We begin activities right away.
Behavior Expectations: Students are expected to follow the Stevenson Tiger Traits which are: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. If they are caught demonstrating one or all of these traits they can earn a Tiger Ticket. Tiger Tickets are turned into the office and displayed on the Bulletin Board outside of the office. Drawings are held each week, and if our class gets picked, we get the school Tiger in our classroom!
Birthdays: A birthday note will be sent home a few days before your child’s birthday. Please do not send drinks or party favors. Due to allergies, send a peanut-free treat that can be passed out quickly. Napkins or paper plates are greatly appreciated. Invitations are not to be brought to school even if you are inviting the entire class. Summer birthdays will be celebrated at the end of the school year.
Daily Homework Reading Books: Every day the students will bring home a plastic bag with a classroom reading book inside. Your child is responsible for reading this book to you and then returning it the very next day. If they do not return their book, another one will not be sent home until the other book is returned. A fee will be issued for any lost books. Books will not be sent home over the weekend. Please go over the story with your child. Ask them questions about what they have they read.
Flying Horse: Each week we enter the Flying Horse contest in The Pantagraph newspaper. Winners are announced in the Sunday comic section.
Reading Logs: Your child will be bringing home a monthly reading log. Please complete the form and return it at the end of the month. An award will be given for those students who complete a reading log every month, at the end of the year.
Scholastic Book Order: Order forms will be sent home each month. Ordering is optional. Please make checks payable to: Scholastic Book Clubs (for the exact amount). They will not accept cash. If you would like to order a book as a surprise gift for your child, indicate that on your order and I will contact you when the books arrive instead of sending it home with your child. You are also welcome to order on-line.
Spelling Tests: Spelling tests start in October. Watch for the list to come home in the Tiger Homework Folder. The words can also be found in the newsletter. Please practice the words with your child.
Star Student: All students will have a special week where they get to be the star! A note will be sent home the Friday before it is their turn. They will need to fill out the Star of the Week paper and bring in 6 photographs (on Monday) to put on their Star of the Week bulletin board. The star student gets to help out Mrs. Dennis. They will help with the calendar board, deliver messages to other teachers, and be line leader. A simple, easy to pass out treat can be brought at the end of the week to help in celebrating your child being a star.
Supplies: The students will need to replace some of their school supplies periodically. Please check if they are in need of pencils, crayons, glue sticks, markers, and erasers.
Tiger Homework Folder: Every Friday, your child will bring home a Stevenson Tiger Homework Folder. Inside the folder you will find a homework assignment, the first grade newsletter, the words of the week, and the spelling list. You are encouraged to work with them on their homework, but please make sure it is being completed by them. All work should be done by the students! The Tiger Folder is to be brought back by the next Thursday with the finished assignment inside. The newsletter, words of the week, and spelling list are yours to keep.
Tiger Ticket: Students can earn a Tiger Ticket for demonstrating being safe, being respectful, and being responsible. The tickets are turned into the office and then placed on the Tiger Traits Bulletin Board outside of the office. The class with the most Tiger Tickets gets to have the Stevenson Tiger in their classroom.
